I am not so sure about that . The city is fairly close to Russian occupied territory in the Eastern Ukraine. Short line of communications for RuSSian forces . This is very different from Stalingrad which was cut off on all side by Soviet forces in a country which was entirely hostile to German forces and their lines of communications stretched all the way back to Germany. The worse case scenario for RuSSians is that it becomes like Verdun a meat grinder or like the Rhzev meat grinder in 1941-43 which cost millions of Soviets lives in futile offensives before the Germans gave it up when they retreated. On a much smaller scale of course but Russia still ahs demographic and numericla advantages over the Ukraine. It's population is more than 3 times the size of the Ukraine's pre war one. By comparison 1941 Germany had a population 1/3 the size of the USSR's.

All true.  But I will add that Stalingrad was a meat grinder for both sides even before it was cut off.  It wasn't a particularly important point to capture except as an ego battle for Hitler to capture a place named after Stalin and Hitler's moronic penchant to never take a step backwards.

Sievierodonestk represents that for Putler.  He can't accomplish anything else of any importance in Ukraine but he feels if he gets that city he can claim a victory in that he captured the Donbas. He has stripped other parts of the front for manpower to do so and that makes those parts (Kharkive, Kherson) vulnerable to Ukrainian pressure. Also he must be taking tremendous casualties taking, losing and taking the city again.  Those were the points that reminded me of Stalingrad.

What you say of demographics is true but how much of that numerical advantage can putler bring to bear? He is loath to declare war so he can ramp up conscription and legally send conscripts to fight in Ukraine. He is already scraping the bottom of many barrels. The Chechens of the puppet Kadyrov have been decimated as have the Wagner group mercenaries. The upper age limit to join the ruzzian army has been raised.

The Ukrainians under full mobilization can field a million men. The ruzzian potential may be more but that has to be realized before it can be brought to bear. I'm sure if it comes down to it he would declare war rather than step back from this criminal war.

TBH the Germans worst mistake at Stalingrad was to have entrusted the protection of their flanks to second rate Romanian forces which collapsed practically without resistance.

True what you are saying about Russian mobilization and Ukrainian potential to field 1 million men. However remember fielding one million men will yield nothing unless you can equip them with heavy and modern weapons. Russia can still manufacture heavy weapons Ukraine is almost entirely dependent on foreign aid. What I think will be the undoing for the Russians will be the partisan war the Ukrainians can conduct in Russian occupied territory which will grind Russian morale and effectiveness down. Germany had to constantly keep 1 million men fighting Russian, Ukrainian, Yugoslavian , Polish, Greek , Italian and other partisans in the occupied territories. These men were missed by the Wehrmacht when faced by tidal Soviet offensives.
