There are many notes abt Russia provocations. Ukraine is a peaceful country, but ready to defend the territory.

I doubt Russian would openly send troops into the Ukraine that would be "Casus Belli" akin to what happened on 3rd September 1939. I think Putin is a bit of a gambler but a very calculating one who looks at the odds and risks very carefully.As a former KGB agent he relies on solid intelligence about his opponents and he knows well Russia's strengths and weaknesses he knows his country is not ready for any kind of protracted strife or conflict.

Yeah the question now is, how far will Russia go, to stop the separatists from being over-run? Increase supplies? Send in more 'volunteers'? Or if 'push comes to shove', are they prepared to do what China did, back in Korea, 1950? A lot of people in the region and internationally must be wondering what the answer is, to that one.

The obvious big difference between 1939 and now is that no country is saying that it will go to war to defend Ukraine like France and Great Britain did for Poland. It would not be a casus belli anymore than Georgia was several years ago and Putin knows it. Heck the West can't even come up with a tough response sanctions wise to the shoot down of the Malaysian airliner due to fear of having Russian gas cutoff to Europe. Russia's risks for invading eastern Ukraine would be more of the same from the West that it got for annexing Crimea. More condemnation and perhaps stiffer sanctions. Yes it would risk a short conventional war with the Ukrainian forces and a protracted asymmetrical conflict with Ukraine, supported by the West.

Putin has a tiger by the tail. He cannot allow failure now that he has championed the cause of ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine. His position is in jeopardy if he cannot deliver on the new nationalism he has raised up. I believe he is willing to take the risk of further conflict with the West in order to right what he sees as a historical wrong, the break up of the Soviet Union. I believe he is quoted as saying that it was the greatest tragedy of the 20th century.

Possibly but Putin is also a realist who can see that his country has lost $ 200 billion in capital flight since the beginning of the year, the Russian economy is contracting and may already be in recession, because of Western sanctions both the domestic car market  and many industries are suffering from shortages of spare parts.The Russian gov has announced a subsidy for consumers to purchase cars in order to jump start the economy. Western Europe is also suffering especially Germany which was the West number 1 exporter to the Russia but Russia depends on Western Europe for 70% of its tradeand Europe has a much stronger economy . Even access to the Chinese market cannot by far compensate.

As far as the Ukraine is concerned I sincerely doubt the majority of the Ukrainians would want to re-integrate any kind of union with Russia as the big brother. Armenia , Georgia and the former Soviet Central Asian republics have no interest at all.Only Belarus would likely join but with Lukashenko being anything but predictable.... In the end Putin may have no other choice but to cut loose the Russian separatists and make a deal with the Ukraine which would save face.

Time will tell, but I think there will be an incursion and possibly a wider war. I'd be delighted to be wrong.
