Re: 76 years later
Remarkable set of photos. What type of armored vehicle was that?

Re: 76 years later
A bazooka at short range or even a US 76 mm anti tank gun could split the armour like that. Most likely the hit reached the ammo and the upper chassis just blew up. The crew most likely did not make it alive. German armour quality at that time was dreadful with brittle steel as they were using nickel alloys and other substitutes to make steel tank bodies instead of manganese and tungsten which the Germans no longer had access to. If you add constant bombings disrupting production and the use of slave labour ( with all the sabotage and poor quality work) you get very under par quality vehicles.

Re: 76 years later
Could equally have been destroyed by its own crew after being damaged or abandoned. Then pushed into the ditch to clear the road.
The caption of this pic of the vehicle says it was destroyed by air attack near Dasburg: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/391391023837308128/
'Battle of the Bulge - Then and Now' has lots of such pics, tho I don't recall this particular JgdPz IV - zimmerit seems to have been rare, possibly as many of the AFVs issued to units for the Battle were relatively new, as in this well-known pic:

Re: 76 years later
While air attacks in WW2 era documentaries always look spectacular with tremendous explosions and huge plumes of smoke and high flames the truth is that according to detailed stats and after battle reports. Only carpet bombing was truly effective. Rockets as used by the Typhoons were notoriously imprecise and looked way more spectacular to the pilots that effective on the ground.

Re: 76 years later
It's very difficult to do attack damage assessment from the air. The claims of attacking pilots were almost always over optimistic. Strafing and rocketing probably was more effective in slowing movement down during daylight hours. No soft skinned convoy would take the chance and would usually stop and everyone would scatter to the ditches and fields.

That's the Koeln cathedral . The scene of the overhyped Panther vs Pershing duel.

And that is the overhyped Panther I believe. The combat footage is interesting though.

Incredible. That large cross with the pock mark on the side of it is still there.

Re: 76 years later
Wow. The differences (solar panels) and road paving and the similarities (cross still in same place on the church and the down spouts and the entry way the same). Thanks iced earth77. I like this series of comparative photos.
