Well the USSR was indomitable in the face of the Nazis but they did leave Afghanistan eventually so it all depends how much it is worth to them. The person that replaces Putin may have a different calculus.

Well WW2 was a matter of life and death for the Soviets whereas Afghanistan was a little (costly) adventure which would eventually bankrupt their country but their existence was not really at stake.

Wow Putin as a saint???? He is represented as a traditional orthodox saint on an icon-style portrait. No wonder he wants to rehabilitate Stalin. He wants the personality cult ( for himself) back!.....

The times have changed and so has Russia and its population. Many young people are questioning the old ways and Putin cannot hope to defy reality like the fatso in North Korea. If he loses popular support he won't be able to pursue his policies.
