Cannes bans full-body 'burkini' swimsuits from beaches

PARIS (AP) — The French resort of Cannes has banned full-body, head-covering swimsuits from its beaches, citing security reasons — a measure some are decrying as a discriminatory anti-Muslim move that only worsens religious tensions.
The ban on so-called burkinis, at the height of the French Riviera's vacation season, comes as France remains on edge after deadly Islamic extremist attacks on nearby Nice and on a Catholic church in northwest France.
Cannes Mayor David Lisnard issued an ordinance in late July forbidding beachwear that doesn't respect "good morals and secularism." It notes that swimwear "manifesting religious affiliation in an ostentatious way, while France and its religious sites are currently the target of terrorist attacks, could create risks of trouble to public order."

That's a very unusual news as for me. I don't understand what is the problem, if someone don't want to be almost fully naked on the beach.

Yeah, it's plainly discriminatory because I think if a French, non Muslim, went to the beach in pants, long sleeves and a hat, no notice would be taken.
The French don't like the Muslims and this is a feel good measure to encourage them to adopt societal norms. They have done the same thing with head coverings. It probably will only result in making the Muslim inhabitants of France feel more estranged, although I don't think European Muslims need much excuse to set themselves apart from the societies into which they've immigrated

Well I can understand the French. Thee want to send the hard-core Muslims, those who don't want to assimilate but on the contrary always try to impose their "religious "values on others a clear message. You want to wear your outfits then flock to the beaches of Saudi Arabia. You don't want to adapt to the West then just leave it and practise your medieval beliefs in a country where you are welcome with open arms( that is if they haven't been amputated t for theft).

I live in a Muslim majority country where the few churches are prohibited from displaying crosses, synagogues are not permitted .During Ramadan all restaurants and cafés are closed from 7 AM till 7 PM and anybody even a non Muslim caught eating , drinking or chewing gum during fasting tours is sent straight to court fined and jailed. So yeah discriminatory the French?> Yeah may be but it's just payback for what we non Muslims have to endure in their countries. And the UAE is one of the most tolerant and open of that faith. Imagine how the others are.....
