I wonder if anyone has any factual information about whether the tank commander of an M-60 tank with a cupola could look out of the cupola hatch when the cupola was not aligned with the main turret.

Re: M-60 commander's cupola
I think it was possible at least for the tank M-48. Here's short text from "The M48-M60 Series of Main Battle
By Robert J. Icks, Colonel USAR Retired", p.9
http://ciar.org/ttk/mbt/afv_weapons_profile_pack/afv_weapons_profile_24__m48-m60_series_of_main_battletank.pdf
PS
Well, is it so important? Just curious.

As I've understood, there is interlock, which can be used at desire to take control over gun. If Commander doesn't want to control gun, then interlock has released his position and Commander may use cupola in any matter what he can, i.e put his head out and don't be bothered had been cupola aligned with gun or not.The gunner has one control handle in front of him, a grip with a trigger also traverses the turret and elevates and depresses the gun. The turret rotates at 4 rpm. The gunner is also provided with manual controls. An override control similar to the gunner's control but with electrical firing trigger only enables the commander to take over from the gunner if he so desires or if it becomes necessary to do so. There also is an interlock which enables the tank commander to control the 90-mm gun by aligning it with the cupola machine-gun. And, as in all U.S. tanks, equipment is provided for conducting indirect fire.

Somebody is wrong on the internet. And I must correct him.
I found some pictures that show that the TC can have his head exposed above the cupola hatch without the cupola and the main gun being aligned.
