I thought Cheetah was Jane's rival for Tarzan's affection?

You're right. You've caught me out on my Tarzania lore. Actually those characters were Hollywood inventions at least the chimp Cheetah was. That never appeared in an Edgar Rice Burroughs book to my knowledge.

Yes I know I read Rice Burroughs book. And base don his character Tarzan would never have spoken English with a California accent (Looking at you Ron Ely)as he was supposed to be a British high born if I remember correctly.

Indeed. And correction it was Ron Eli not Ely who played in that Tarzan series.

I still regard Burroughs as a master of that genre and the Martian novels as well. Disappearing down the nostalgia rabbit hole, I still remember sitting in my father's lap while he read "Tarzan The Invincible" to me and having to ask what invincible meant. I was amazed to read the wiki now and find out that the plot had Tarzan and Waziri warriors (whoever they were) prevent Soviet Communists from looting the lost city of Opar. LOL, in 1930 the Commies filled the spot that the Nazis held in the later Indiana Jones stories.

I didn't realize that he wrote 24 Tarzan books. Burroughs seems to have found a winning formula and stuck to it back in the 20s and 30s.

Jane and Tarzan Empty Jane and Tarzan

He was very popular in Europe. His works were translated into German and French and I read Tarzan when I was 7 or 8. I also watched Johnny Weissmueller's Tarzan film when I was 9. Ron Eli, by comparison, was too yuppy and too civilized. Lambert Wilson did not convince me in the role either.
