I still regard Burroughs as a master of that genre and the Martian novels as well. Disappearing down the nostalgia rabbit hole, I still remember sitting in my father's lap while he read "Tarzan The Invincible" to me and having to ask what invincible meant. I was amazed to read the wiki now and find out that the plot had Tarzan and Waziri warriors (whoever they were) prevent Soviet Communists from looting the lost city of Opar. LOL, in 1930 the Commies filled the spot that the Nazis held in the later Indiana Jones stories.
I didn't realize that he wrote 24 Tarzan books. Burroughs seems to have found a winning formula and stuck to it back in the 20s and 30s.
