    The Ghosts of Czech Border Fortifications.

    Quote... In the interwar period, Czechoslovakia expanded its powerful network of fortifications along the border with Germany. Today we look at the ghosts of Czech border fortifications  captured by Czech photographer Roman Kubeček.

    Work on the fortifications began in 1935 because of fears of a German invasion at the border (number 1545 kilometers). The huge project aimed to build thousands of bunkers and defensive positions along the border with Germany, Austria and Hungary.

    These Czechoslovakian fortresses were managed by elite soldiers, so called border regiments, who had to abandon and surrender their their posts because of the Munich Agreement. Unfortunately, these fortifications have never helped in the defense of their southern neighbor.

    Quote... Construction started in the last 1920s, and the defense system was named after Henri Maginot, ministry of war at the time and a major advocate of the project, who died well before its completion in 1932.

    Construction works continued till at least 1935 on the Italian and German sectors. Soon after, in 1936 due to the re-negotiations of the alliance with Belgium, the line was partly extended along the border between France and Belgium, but it never reached completion, thus failing to seal that sector of the border, which might have been possible only by reaching the coast of the Channel.
