As the WSJ states, it seems more likely, that the truth is that she was kidnapped last year by Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine and is now being held for diplomatic ransom.

This isn’t the only time in recent months that the Kremlin has played this kind of game. Estonian security official Eston Kohver was kidnapped in Estonian territory last year and tried in a Russian court for espionage. Mr. Kohver was returned to Estonia last month in exchange for a double-agent who had spied on behalf of the Kremlin in Tallinn for two decades.

According to WSJ, we should expect similar provocations, large and small, to continue so long as the West signals its willingness to acquiesce in Mr. Putin’s aggressions, from Latakia to Luhansk.

As was previously informed, Savchenko`s lawyers say she is considering a “dry” hunger strike.

Sister of the Ukrainian pilot and Verkhovna Rada deputy from the Batkivshchyna faction Nadiya Savchenko Vira has been denied entry to the territory of the Russian Federation until 2020.
One of the lawyers of Nadiya Savchenko Mark Feigin wrote on Twitter, Censor.NETreports.
"Vira Savchenko was notified that the FSB has banned her entry into the Russian Federation at the Cherkovo-Milove border crossing point on the border between Russia and Ukraine," Feigin wrote.
He also informed that Vira Savchenko has been forbidden entry to the territory of Russia until 2020.

Obviously, russians occupants scared of the Ukrainian patriots.

The Ukrainian World Congress urged the UN Commission of the Status of Women to demand from the Russian authorities immediately release the illegally detained Ukrainian Russian pilot, Congresswomen Nadiya Savchenko.

Savchenko goes on hunger strike again

The Russian court has extended custody of Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko until April 16, 2016.
Nadiya Savchenko's lawyer Mark Feigin wrote on Twitter, Censor.NET informs.
"Right now Savchenko is having her confinement extended for three months until April 16, 2016 ..." he wrote.
According to the lawyer, Savchenko has gone on a hunger strike again after that.
"Savchenko goes on hunger strike. I hope there will be at least one journalist among thousands, who will pose a question to Putin about Savchenko," Feigin wrote.
He also noted that Savchenko would go on hunger strike starting from tomorrow (Dec. 18).

Due to the violation of the judicial system of the Russian Federation to Nadiya Savchenko legal rights of an adequate lawyer defense at January 27 2016 the consul of the Russian Embassy in Ukraine was called to MFA of Ukraine and handed a note of protest against the ongoing tyranny against her so-called russian justice.

H.Res.50 - Calling for the release of Ukrainian fighter pilot Nadiya Savchenko, who was captured by Russian forces in Eastern Ukraine and has been held illegally in a Russian prison since July 2014.

Whereas the Government of the United States and its people express concern about the continued illegal imprisonment of Nadiya Savchenko: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives—

(1) condemns the Government of the Russian Federation for its illegal imprisonment of Nadiya Savchenko;

(2) calls on the Government of the Russian Federation to immediately release Nadiya Savchenko;

(3) calls on the United States, its European allies, and the international community to aggressively support efforts to release Nadiya Savchenko and other illegally detained persons;

(4) reiterates that it is the policy of the United States not to recognize the de jure or de facto sovereignty of the Russian Federation over any part of Ukraine, its airspace, or its territorial waters;

(5) calls upon the United States to impose targeted sanctions against persons responsible for the kidnapping, arrest, and imprisonment of Nadiya Savchenko and other illegally detained persons; and

(6) expresses solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

Nadiia Savchenko’s last plea postponed by Russian court.
Ukrainian pilot Nadiia Savchenko was to deliver pre-imposition statement in the court today. It should be followed by the court’s decision concerning the date of verdict announcement. However, the judge adjourned the hearing of case until March 9.

"I do not admit guilt. I do not agree with the verdict and recognize the Russian court either. I am not going to appeal against the verdict of guilty. I want the whole democratic civilized world to realize that Russia is a third world country ruled by a totalitarian regime and the dictator-tyrant, where the human rights and international law are trampled upon.

"The situation, when abductors and torturers are pretending to have the right to judge their victims, is an absurd! Is it possible to talk about a fair trial?! There are no legitimate criminal investigations and court decisions in Russia! There is only a show staged by the Kremlin puppets. And I deem it to be absolutely meaningless to waste a part of my life participating in it!

"Therefore, there will be no appeal against the verdict. This is what will happen instead: I am going to resume hunger strike for another ten days following the verdict, until the sentence comes into force regardless of the translation into the Ukrainian, as they are also able to spin out time in Ukrainian. I will go on a dry hunger strike ten days later, and Russia will have less than ten days to bring me back to Ukraine, where they abducted me from! And I do not care how they are going to justify it! I heard that Petro Poroshenko is pretty skilled in diplomacy. I hope that his diplomatic skills will be enough to reach agreement with one idiot in Russia, because he has promised my mother that I will be home back in May 2015.

"And while I will be bargained for, my life I will be draining away and Russia will return me in Ukraine anyway - either dead or alive, but it will return me!

"And my sister will be standing at the prison gate all these ten days day and night. She will be waiting for my release or my dead body. And if you imprison her, my mother will come in her stead. She is 77 years old. Will you lock her up as well? In this case, my friend will take her place, and then another Ukrainian and another! And mark my words - you will not have enough cells in your prisons for all of them! But while my fellow countrymen will be standing, the ordinary honest and decent Russians living nearby will bring them hot tea, sandwiches, and blankets for they all understand that a child of each of them may take my place tomorrow in this prison of all peoples called Russia!

"That is how the Maidans are triggered! Do you really need it? You avoid it like the plague! Therefore it is better for the Kremlin to return me in Ukraine as soon as possible and alive!!!

"Meanwhile all states with democratic values should better learn the lessons of history in due time and recall that Europe once tolerated Hitler and U.S. was hesitant which led to the Second World War. Putin is a petty tyrant with emperor's habits, complexes of Napoleon and Hitler combined! A bear does not understand human language - it understands only the language of force. Therefore, if we do not become more determined and define priorities in due time, we will soon have a World War III!

"And as a politician, I will not extend my hand to Russia on the political arena. It is awkward to shake hands with someone who has been holding you in handcuffs and your people in shackles. But taking every political decision, I will always assess its impact on the ordinary people both in Ukraine and Russia for there are still a lot of honest, good, and decent people in Russia in spite of everything."

Today I've been on the meeting devoted to Nadia Savchenko. She was kidnapped by russian occupants more than one year ago. We're Ukrainian people have a request - Russia, Free Nadia Savchenko!

President of the European Council Donald Tusk called on Russia to immediately release Ukrainian pilot Nadiia Savchenko and other Ukrainian political prisoners.
He said this during a trilateral meeting in Brussels with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Actually, Nadia already confessed that had killed russian occupants. She is soldier and she promised to defend Ukraine as all other Ukrainian soldiers and patriots!

Russia may exchange Savchenko if she pleads guilty of murder, - Nadiia's mother.
The Russian Federation is ready to exchange Ukrainian soldier and people's deputy Nadiia Savchenko if Ukraine acknowledges the validity of the verdict delivered against her by Russia's court.
As reported by Censor.NET citing Interfax-Ukraine, this was announced by Nadiia's mother Maria Savchenko.
"They (the Ukrainian side) want to swap her, but Russia puts two conditions: recognizing the validity of the verdict by Russia's court and exchanging her for others (Russian prisoners in Ukraine)," she noted.
"Acknowledging being a killer and having killed? Why live with that stigma if she did not kill? And they fabricated 39 volumes of all types of lies," the mother added.
However, Maria Savchenko noted that the leadership of Ukraine is making every effort to return Nadia home.
"The president is trying to help, especially now he persuades Nadiia to postpone the hunger strike at least for a day. When I saw him, he said he was thinking 24 hours about Nadiia and struggling to get her back," Nadiia's mother said.

It seems the Russians are willing to drop their demands and just exchange her against their guys who were sentenced. At least that's what I tread in Die Welt today.

But, but the only Russians fighting in Ukraine are volunteers. Surely they are there at their own risk?

I suspect they are volunteers the same way the Germans fighting alongside Franco in the Condor Legion in Spain 1936-1939 were volunteers or many of the leftists fighting for the Republicans. I.e sponsored officially by Hitler or Stalin. I suspect the Russian volunteers are subsidized and sponsored by the Russian gov.
